Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is located 18 km the north of Marayoor, in Idukki district of the magnificent Indian state of Kerala. It is one of the twelve wildlife sanctuaries of the state, which is declared as 'Protected Areas'. Set along the splendid backwaters of Devikulam, the sanctuary is spread over a huge area of 90 sq km of Western Ghats. Due to the variations in altitude and rainfall, the vegetation also varies from deciduous forests, dry thorny forest to sholas and grasslands. These habitats resulting in plains, rocks, small hills and cliffs, that house several varieties of flora and fauna.


Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is blessed with around 965 species of flowering plants. In the lower elevation region thorny scrub forests are found, in which major species of Xerophytic as Acacia arabica, Acacia concinna and Opuntia stricta.

Also the sanctuary houses the famous Marayoor Sandalwood Forests.


In this wonderful sanctuary you will find the 34 species of beasts and more than 245 species of birds.
Panthers, Tiger, Sambar, Spotted Deer, Elephant, Gaur, Common Langur, Bonnet Macaque, Hanuman Monkey, Nilgiri Thar, Rusty-Spotted Cats, etc.
Peacock, Kingfisher, Yellow-Throated Bulbul, Myna, woodpeckers and many more. Also in Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary 52 species of reptiles, 42 species of fish, 22 species of amphibians and 156 species of butterflies are found. It is the sanctuary, in which the largest population of Mugger crocodile resides.

Grizzled Giant Squirrel
With the best efforts of the sanctuary the population of endangered species of Grizzled Squirrels is now more than 240, which is the second largest population of Grizzled Squirrels in the world.
Thoovanam Waterfalls
Deep inside in the sanctuary the enchanting Thoovanam Waterfall is the major attraction of this place.
Watch Tower
From the high Watch Tower you may enjoy the mesmerizing birds-eye view of the entire park.
